MISSION
The mission of The Ocean Cleanup is to develop advanced technologies to rid the world’s oceans of plastic. As part of our strategy to do this, we design, develop, and deploy cleanup systems to stop plastic from reaching our oceans by intercepting it in rivers.
Our driven Engineering team within the Rivers department develops and implements the technical solutions for river cleaning, in close cooperation with Operations and other technical teams. This can mean both R&D-style development as well as recurring project engineering and deployment. Our scope of work stretches from specification and architecting/conceptualization, through design & verification, to installation, testing & commissioning. We combine in-house development and engineering work with (outsourcing and verification of) third party engineering work, to find the most effective solutions.

THE ASSIGNMENT
As (Senior) Engineer you contribute to the whole team scope through the following tasks and responsibilities, tailored to a suitable role for you:
- Architect technical interception solutions
- Perform hands-on engineering (design, verification, installation, test, commissioning) on assigned projects
- Supervise and review technical work packages of internal colleagues and external suppliers, on assigned projects, with responsibility to sign off quality of work (for more senior roles)
- Support and mentor colleagues (for more senior roles)
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of engineering quality practices, standards, processes and tools.
- Contribute to the interception solutions portfolio roadmapping and technical-strategic initiatives in this frame
- Education and experience in Marine / Civil water engineering or other mechanical and fluids heavy education, with subsequent marine/civil-water domain experience
- Hands-on design, analysis and commissioning experience
- Ability to define and uphold quality, while seeking pragmatic solutions
- Fluent in English
- Ability to travel to project sites in the Americas and Asia
- Hands-on manufacturing experience or affinity is a pro
- Some exposure to Project Management is a pro
- Affinity with "stuff on and in the water" (boats, sailing etc) is a pro
- Pro if a person can be located abroad for extended durations for in-field work
- Command of Dutch, Spanish and/or South-East Asian languages is a strong pro Experience in 2D and 3D CAD software and fluid and/or structure simulation software is a pro
- Intrinsically motivated for our mission to rid the worlds cceans and rivers of plastics
- Creative and curious
- Strong ability in problem analysis, structuring and solution synthesis
- Ability to work in a fast-paced and pragmatic manner; the "getting things done" mode.
- Ability as well to work in a calm, detail-oriented and analytical manner
- Cognitive agility; recognize situations and shifting mindset to what the situation needs.
- At least a rudimentary sense of humour is required
- Strong communicator interfacing with technical and non-technical roles across various cultures
- Self-awareness and good management of personal energy
