Are you a WO data science student which is looking for a graduation assignment? Are you ready for the challenge to use large amounts of historic life time data to predict future printhead performance? We are looking for you!
Your assignment
The printhead is the droplet forming unit, the heart of our printers. Failing of the printhead directly impacts print quality and replacement is a very costly event. The number of failing printheads has impact on our company in several ways. Of course it influences the profitability but it also has an impact on the future printhead production plans. For both it is important to be able to predict the number of failing printheads.
From the available printer logging data we can describe the failure/survival behavior of printheads in the past as a function of several load factors (age, ink usage, etc). The goal of this project is to develop a method to predict the number of printheads that will fail in the future based on the available historic data.

Challenges for you are:
  • Find the optimal method to predict future printhead failure. Several approaches can be chosen, all with pros and cons which need to be uncovered.
  • Can you deal with increasing/decreasing population sizes?
  • Can the use of additional information (failure mechanisms, user profiles) help to optimize the method or improve predictions for certain groups of customers or production periods?
  • You will have to deal with large amounts but, unfortunately, sometimes incomplete data. Although we have information of tens of thousands of printheads, not all printers are connected to our system, leading to voids in the data

Your profile
  • You are currently studying Data Science or Data Analytics and you are looking for your graduation assignment at a big international company
  • You have a critical attitude and you are curious to understand your own observations.
  • You have at least basic Python and SQL knowledge
  • As of 1 sept 2024 you are available for 5 to 8 months for a minimum of 4 days per week
