This is an exciting opportunity to join the Curriculum Development Team in the Education Office as a Senior Curriculum Manager for the Middle Years Programme (11-16). The details of this leadership role follow below but it is important to note that we recognize that you might not be familiar with all the details of the current workstreams. The purpose of this role is to provide high-level curriculum development expertise, ensuring that the Middle Years programme curriculum development team functions effectively and that the curriculum review process is continuously improving in line with the purpose and aims of IB’s educational philosophy, the IB continuum of learning and current learning and teaching evidence. The successful candidate will work highly collaboratively on the continuous strengthening of the MYP programme with the team of MYP curriculum designers, the MYP programme coordinator and the Operations team.
The successful candidate will report hierarchically to the Head of Capacity and functionally, to the Head of Programmes PYP/MYP.

Specific responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Lead the curriculum development for the MYP, ensuring all curriculum review workstreams are connected.
  • Champion principles, such as inclusion, diversity, equity, and access, ensuring they inform the curriculum design process.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Programme PYP /MYP with the implementation of the Enhancing the MYP project and deliver on both the programme review and subject guidance review.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Programme PYP/MYP and Senior Capacity Manager for 3-16 programmes to hire, guide and support colleagues in their work.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Programme PYP/MYP and Senior Capacity Manager 3-16 to identify priorities for curriculum development activities and agree team member CM responsibilities for each activity.
  • Provide actionable feedback on the quality of the work during the curriculum development process offering advice and leadership where needed.
  • Support curriculum managers in internal meetings and curriculum development meetings as needed.
  • Collaborate with counterparts in Assessment Development and Delivery (ADD) and Assessment Research Design (ARD) where processes and/or specific curriculum development work intersect.
  • Maintain close working relationship with Senior Subject Manager MYP (ADD) in Cardiff.
  • Be accountable for the development of school facing support material.
  • Quality assure and be responsible for first line ‘sign-off’ for curriculum materials with a clear recommendation for the Head of Programme.
  • Negotiate handover deadlines and signing-off materials for submission to MEP (Multilingual Editorial Production Department).
  • Provide educational expertise on the MYP across all IB offices and departments to increase 3-19 coherence and raise the quality of our curriculum products for teachers and students.
  • Support the organization in the strategic mission to increase the number of IB schools, and to widen the accessibility of the MYP.
  • As a member of the extended leadership team within the Curriculum Development department, the successful candidate will be involved in a wide range of inter- and intra-office initiatives.


Key accountabilities:

Educational and Pedagogical Leadership

  • Keep abreast of research and major developments and innovations in teaching, learning and assessment leading to the development of high-quality curriculum.
  • Ensure that reports and presentations meet the needs of audiences and inspire and enthuse participants about an IB education.
  • Be proactive in initiating contact with relevant professionals and organizations is and ensure that these relationships are well managed.
  • Ensure that connections and ideas are documented and disseminated as a foundation for future curriculum development.
  • Ensure that innovative thinking and direction are demonstrated based on research and observation.

Leading MYP programme and subject review

  • Lead curriculum managers (CMs) in the design and development of programme structures, curriculum and assessment models and materials that support teaching and learning in schools, and the evidencing of the aims and purpose of an IB education.
  • Take a project management approach in programme and subject reviews that effectively scopes, plans, manages risk and change, allocates resources, and prioritizes goals.
  • Provide critical constructive feedback to colleagues.
  • Ensure that the curriculum review process lives up to the curriculum expectations of evidence-led, research informed and mission-driven.
  • Ensure that the curriculum review process is characterized by collaboration and consultation leading to agreed outcomes is enacted.
  • Commit to incorporating student voice in Enhancing the MYP

MYP Programme support across departments

  • Provide MYP curriculum expertise to the whole organization to ensure the IB offers a coherent and connected middle years programme.
  • Ensure that all major initiatives across offices receive MYP curriculum team input.
  • Ensure that MYP curriculum contribution is provided to Development, Authorization and IIB World Schools departments to aid school facing work.
  • Commit to continued collaboration with CDC (Curriculum Development Collaboration) team to ensure coherence across 3-19

Professional development of colleagues

  • Contribute to the development of CMs and other colleagues to continuously improve the work of the MYP team.
  • Ensure that MYP team members are effectively working together positively, and productive relationships are developed and maintained.
  • Work with Senior Capacity Manager 3-16 to increase DEI representation on MYP team and support the hiring of new colleagues with a wide range of experiences and expertise.
  • Work with the CDC team on the professionalization of the curriculum design process.
  • Coach colleagues (informally) to raise performance in MYP projects.
  • Contribute to performance and development discussions through engagement with the 3-16 SCM Capacity.
  • Quality assure and sign off on the deliverables of the curriculum managers.
  • Provide ongoing instruction and coaching to the MYP team, ensuring they receive professional development and actionable feedback on the quality of their work throughout.
  • Behave with integrity, listen attentively, and treat people fairly.

Professional development for teachers

  • Support CM’s engagement with IB’s Professional Learning department to ensure programme/subject changes are accurately articulated in professional development services to upskill educators.
  • Support CMs to ensure that critical constructive feedback and review is offered to Professional Learning colleagues.
  • Support CMs to ensure that key changes are accurately articulated in PL content.

Thought leadership and external representation.

  • Represent the MYP and the IB in a variety of contexts and to a variety of audiences, including committees within the organization, school administrators and teachers, universities, and external agencies, to promote the mission of the organization and to enhance the understanding of its programme.
  • Contribute to seminars, conferences, and workshops within and outside the IB as appropriate.
  • Contribute to thought leadership though articles, blogs, seminars, conferences, and workshops within and beyond the IB.
  • Cultivate a community of educators, experts, alumni, and students engaged in the continuous improvement of and innovation in the MYP.

Communication

  • Ensure effective communication to all stakeholders as needed so that relevant information about the programme and/or programme components is available in a timely manner to enhance their implementation.
  • Lead and/or collaborate with colleagues to ensure relevant communications materials are produced and/or updated to a high standard and on schedule.
  • Act as point of contact and collaborates well with colleagues within and across all programmes and divisions as appropriate, with staff in professional learning IB World Schools, Development and Recognition, and Assessment.
  • Lead and/or support with CMs to ensure that internal stakeholders are fully informed about changes that would impact their work at the appropriate time.
  • Lead and/or support CMs to ensure external stakeholders are informed about changes promptly.

Budget management

  • In consultation with the Head of Programme PYP/MYP and Programme Coordinator, plan and monitor MYP budget lines.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • A relevant qualification at Masters’ level or equivalent in curriculum/instructional design, educational leadership or teaching and learning
  • Emotionally highly intelligent with the ability to quickly build trust-based relationships within a team and across the large and complex IB organization.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in English.
  • Excellent presentation skills with the ability to adapt to a variety of audiences and purpose.
  • Proven people leadership capability with the ability to build, lead, develop and motivate a team, and to foster an inclusive, diverse, and collaborative environment, preferably in an international context.
  • Capable of responding to changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to take responsibility openly for complex and tough decisions and deliver them to internal and external international groups and individuals in an effective and sensitive way.

Desirable

  • Knowledge and experience of the IB Middle Years Programme
  • Experience in curriculum development, assessment and/or educational research
  • Good understanding of trends and latest thinking in teaching and learning.
  • Competency in additional languages.
