Location: The successful candidate may be based in a country where one of the independent National/Regional Greenpeace organisations (NRO’s) is located. See the locations here. We are unable to support hosting of new staff in Africa, India, US, UK, Italy, Colombia, MENA region, in addition to some other NRO locations. Greenpeace International (GPI) is looking for a Project Manager to support the build of the new Greenpeace Ship!
The Project Manager plays a crucial role in providing overall project coordination and management for the new ship project. This role requires a combination of strategic planning, team coordination, and stakeholder engagement skills to ensure the successful completion of the project. They will be part of GPI’s Build Management Team, Core Team, as well as the GPI Shipyard Team if and when required.
The Project Manager, reporting to the Task Giver of the New Ship project (currently the Deputy International Programme Director), will provide overall project coordination and management to the New Ship project. This role will ensure alignment across all teams and personnel involved in the new ship project, including the New Ship Technical Project Manager and their technical teams, as well as scheduling, planning, and production of materials for decision-makers. The role will be responsible for liaison and day-to-day coordination with other areas of GPI which are involved in the new ship project. This role will also oversee the day-to-day management of the internal budgets for the duration of the build, as well the contracts with external suppliers.
In this role you:
Serve as a clear liaison between the Task Giver and all GPI functions involved in the new ship project by proactively seeking alignment, links, and ways of integrating work streams.
Support the New Ship Technical Project Manager in the development and execution of comprehensive project plans, encompassing all phases of the ship construction, from initial design to final delivery.
Proactively identify and pre-empt, where possible, potential implementation and scheduling obstacles.
In liaison with the New Ship Technical Project Manager, support the allocation of resources, including manpower, materials, and equipment, to optimize project efficiency.
Implement robust project management methodologies and best practices to drive successful project outcomes.
Oversee compliance of all subcontractors and involved parties with GPI policies.
Provide high-level coordination and steer to the New Ship Core team, fostering a collaborative and high-performing work environment.
Organize effective task delegation, empowering team members to take ownership of their responsibilities and contribute to project success.
Coordinate with various external stakeholders including NROs, engineers, designers, suppliers, subcontractors, and regulatory agencies to ensure alignment with project goals and specifications.
Act as the point of contact for internal stakeholders, including senior management.
Foster strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including clients, vendors, regulatory agencies, and project team members, to facilitate collaboration and resolve conflicts.
Communicate project objectives, progress updates, and key milestones clearly and concisely to stakeholders at all levels.
Proactively manage stakeholder expectations and address any concerns or challenges in a timely and transparent manner.
Develop and manage project budgets tracking and resource allocation to ensure cost-effective project execution, paying attention to ensuring that reporting is streamlined.
Identify potential risks and challenges associated with the project and develop comprehensive risk mitigation strategies to minimize their impact, under the leadership of the Task Giver.
Monitor project performance metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs), implementing corrective actions as necessary to address deviations from project goals.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives, leveraging lessons learned from previous projects to optimize processes, enhance efficiency, and elevate project delivery capabilities.

Proven experience in project management, ideally to include some experience within the shipbuilding or maritime fields.
Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively lead multidisciplinary teams and engage with diverse stakeholders.
Experience working in an international organization.
Demonstrable commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and ability to collaborate with cross-cultural teams.
Capable of working cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness.
